You can fly into Montpellier, Carcassonne, and Perpignan with low cost airlines, we used Montpellier as a base. A great choice as it is a lovely lively city with lots to see, great food a lively nightlife, it’s own beach and with good access to other places in the area.
Royal Hotel, Rue Maguelune very handy for the station, which is in the centre of the city and a short walk from the heart of the old town. Very reasonable with helpful staff.
Les Caves Jean Jaures, 3, Rue Collot A great restaurant with a wine selection from a whole wall of wines, the set three course dinner is incredible value, the food is great, service excellent and there is even a coffee menu booking advisable €€
La Girafe, 14 Rue de Palais , a very modern restaurant in a lovely old building, a very different menu, with good service booking recommended €€€
Le Prince de Minorque, 1 Rue des Teissiers one of a number of restaurants in this street reasonably priced lunch menu €
Le Bouchon St Roch 15 Rue Du Plan D’Agde wonderful value set lunch and set dinner great in warm weather when you can sit outside the inside is not so appealing

Le Jardin de Marrakech, 74 Rue de l’Aguillerie (nr Boulevard Louis Blanch) this is a great area for ethnic restaurants and a variety of studenty bars. This restaurant does reasonably good Moroccan food not the best ever but worth a visit €€
La Terrasse, 1 Rue en Rouen, Lots of choice in set menus middle quality and price but good setting €€
Restaurant La Ferme, 5 Rue du Four des Flammes, a great value lovely small restaurant with some outdoor seating but very nice inside lovely friendly service and the best roast potatoes ever € to €€
Le Comptoir de L’Arc, 2 Rue Hotel de Ville, a trendy bar with some great outdoor seating, happy hour cocktails and a good variety of different types of food
Mi Barrio 11 Rue Du Plan d’Agde just by St Roch Church, run by Claude this wine bar has a great reasonable selection wine, special tasting and live music on some nights plus cold dishes such as a selection of cheeses
At the bottom of the above street is a small local bar with some great outdoor tables
Times Café Rue des Tessiers, a small wine bar doing cold meats and cheeses
Places to visit from Montpellier
Everyone goes there to visit the old walled city there is shuttle bus from the new town to the old part but is doesn’t run at lunchtimes and it’s not easy to find the stops ask at the tourist office. Inside the old city there are numerous places to eat some very touristy others not so two places recommended are
Restaurant Le St Jean, 1 Place St Jean a lovely setting with a variety of menus including one to try the Cassoulet €€
Comptoir des Vins et Terroirs, Rue de Comte Roger, a lovely wine bar with a great choice of wines and some cold dishes.
A lovely town on the coast with lots of canals and beaches. Quai General Durand, which is on one side of the main canal, is full of fish restaurants of all standards.
Restaurant La Calanque at number 17 seem popular and has a variety of set menus it is probably a good middling choice €€
A short journey from Montpellier, great for a day trip, the Amphitheatre is amazing and there is no shortage of places to eat. For a drink go to the Café on the roof of the new Carre Modern Art Museum called Le Ciel de Nimes wonderful setting the food looked good.
Lots to see strolling round the old town it has more of an edge than Montpellier it is easy in the old part to wander into areas that need a bit of caution.
Hotel de La Loge, Rue Fabriques d’en Nabot is an incredibly cheap hotel in the heart of the old town, it is very old fashioned but well appointed for the price
Casa Sansa, Rue Fabrique Couverte a great Catalan restaurant with a huge menu, good service and a lovely feel to the place €€
Divil , 9 Rue Fabrique d’en Nabot, a restaurant specialising in grilled meats worth trying €€
Café de La Maree, 7 Rue Paratilla, a wonderful friendly local bar with great wines and cold dishes such as pate, cheese and cold meats great music as well
Le Grand Café Del La Poste, Place de Verdun one of the better cafes to sit outside with good service.
